Background & challange

Motala Municipality requested a review of their website to stay updated on accessibility. Suggestions for changes have been presented, emphasizing the requirements of the Swedish DOS law.

Only the visual aspects have been assessed, not the code.

How the accessibility review was conducted

Analysis of desktop och mobil units:

  • Homepage

  • Navigation pages

  • Content page

  • Search page

Below are some examples of pain points and solutions. Please contact me to access the full accessibility review.

Navigation

Painpoint
No existing breadcrumbs, which are necessary for users to understand their location on the site.

Suggested actions
Two diffrent ways of how to use breadcrumbs

WCAG AAA - contrast of text

WCAG Level AAA requires the following contrast ratio:
• 7:1 for regular text
• 4.5:1 for large text (18.66 px and bold or at least 24 px)

Suggested actions
• Increase the size of headings in the main menu in the header to at least 19 px and increase weight to 600 (semibold).
• Review all contrasts and aim to achieve Level AAA where possible.

Search area is small on mobile

Painpoint
The search box should be large enough to accommodate the average search query. It becomes difficult to write if the entire query is not visible.

Suggested actions
The search box should fill the width on small devices.
• Add a button to activate the search.
• Add a secondary button to close the search.

Feedback and future implementation

The accessibility report was presented to Motala Municipality in November 2024, and we received great feedback on points they had already identified as needing changes.

It is part of the foundation for an investigation, and the changes will be made once the investigation is released.
